TRACHEOSTOMY CARE

Caring for a patient with tracheostomy requires the nurse to have an understanding of tracheostomy care in order to provide safe and infection free practices to prevent risk of respiratory complications. This course aims to provide knowledge and skill in performing tracheostomy care on the change of dressing.

At the end of the course, participants should be able to:

  1. Discuss the term tracheostomy in relation to the structure of the trachea.
  2. Explain the purposes for tracheostomy insertion, its care and change of dressing.
  3. Recognise the types of tracheostomy tubes, its components and features.
  4. Relate the standard precautions and complications during tracheostomy care.
  5. Assess, plan and prepare the types of equipment/items for tracheostomy care.
  6. Assist in changing of tracheostomy tube and dressing in accordance with organisational policies and procedures.
